Drip coffee is made by pouring water through roasted and ground coffee powder into a coffee filter, allowing the water to flow through the coffee powder to extract the flavorings from the coffee.
How to make Drip Coffee
1. Prepare your equipment:
- Dripper (e.g., V60 or Kalita Wave)
- Filter paper
- Ground coffee (recommended: coarse to medium grind)
- Kettle (gooseneck kettle for better water control)
- Scale + timer
- Server or glass
2. Coffee-to-Water Ratio
- 1 gram of coffee: 15–17 grams of water (depending on your preferred strength)
- For example: 15 grams of coffee + 250 grams of water
3. Brewing Procedure
- Rinse the filter paper.
Pour hot water through the filter paper to reduce paper odor and warm the equipment.
- Add coffee powder.
Pour ground coffee into the dripper and shake gently to evenly distribute the coffee powder.
- Bloom (Blooming the coffee)
Pour a small amount of hot water (approximately 92–96°C) twice the amount of coffee (e.g., 15 grams of coffee → 30 grams of water). Let it steep for 30–45 seconds.
👉 This helps the carbon dioxide in the coffee evaporate, resulting in a cleaner, more refined taste.
- Pour water in a circular motion.
Gently pour the remaining hot water in a circular motion from the center outward, avoiding the edge of the dripper directly.
- Pour one round at a time, allowing the water to drain before continuing.
- Total brewing time: approximately 2:30–3:30 minutes
- Serve and drink once the drip is complete.
This will give you a distinct aroma, a clear, balanced flavor, and a smooth, balanced coffee.
4. Tips for a better taste:
- Use clean filtered water (RO + TDS adjustment is best, as we discussed earlier 😁).
- Adjust the coffee grind level → Fine grind = rich flavor / Coarse grind = clear flavor.
- Control weight and time consistently.
👉 Summary: Drip coffee = ground coffee + hot water + careful timing and pouring. This results in a cup of coffee that's both fragrant and clean.
